Woodworking courses in Berlin Neukölln. The main focus lies on traditional wooden joinery as well as use and care of Japanese woodworking tools. These hands on courses include Japanese joinery, Chinese joinery and traditional western joinery. The courses will be held in english and german.


Course: Using Japanese Tools (B)

Course fom 6th March until 7th March 2025

 

Wispy shavings, quick saw cuts and precisely chopped mortises. Japanese tools seem very mysterious and embued with many rules.

In this workshop I will get you acquainted with Japanese handtools and show you the basics of how to utilize them properly. The main focus will lie on the handplane or kanna, the chisels or nomi  and the saws, also known as nokogiri. After this course you will have a deeper understanding of the basics for using Japanese handtools and have the possibility to further advance your technique.

To test your skills and practice, you will build a small hanging shelf.

Course: Sharpening (B)

Course on the 21st February 2024

 

Sharpening correctly is an art in and of itself. Working with sharp tools is a game changer. Be it woodworking tools, cooking tools or gardening tools, being able to sharpen anything oneself is a liberating feeling.

In this course I will show you how you can quickly and efficiently sharpen your tools and keep them sharp with little effort. No blunt tools ever again!

Course: Split Dovetails and Ryonawa Gumi

Course from 6th February until 7th February 2025

 

The aesthetically pleasing split dovetails and the unusual looking Ryonawa Gumi are the perfect entry level joints for your next project. They are not only elegant, but also very strong joints.

In this course I will teach you how to plan these joints and construct them with the greatest precision possible. From the marking out of the joint to gluing up, I will convey to you the entirety of my knowledge of these joints.

You will be building a stool, showcasing one of the joints on either side.

Course: Kanna Intensive

//Beginner and intermediate//

 

Course from 20th March until 21st March 2025

 

In this course we will be dedicating orselves to learning the ins and outs of the Japanese hand palne or Kanna. I will be showing you how to correctly set up and tune a new Kanna or how to refurbish an old, rusty kanna to take thin, whispy shavings. We will also be delving into the world of Kanna sharpening and upkeep. Another very important topic we will tackle is working with the Kanna. I will show you the technique to be able to plane wide surfaces or form pieces of wood organically. Also, tuning and general tips and tricks for a better understanding of the kanna.

I still have some vintage Kanna to restore for a surcharge of 50€.
